So where do you begin to start getting you're content found and picked up by Google?
Before thinking of ranking and high exposure the first thing you need to think about is "How are Google going to find me"?
It is important to index your web pages, this is so your website can be found. When Google pull out a web page in a search result it will go looking for content, normally it will show content which is original, well written and not copied by another website etc....
Linking to other sites will also help the search engines to find new web pages, this is because when a search engine finds a link from one site it will follow it to see where it goes, if your content is adequate, then it is likely it then be indexed.
When SEO first started out it was an important task to submit your site the the major search engines, Today though I can tell you there is not so much need for this practise. I see many SEO company's banging on about the importance of site submission and charging for it, but this is not the case anymore. Yes, i do suggest that the first time you launch a website it is good practise and maybe if you are doing a major update on your site. But SEO is much more than just submitting a website to the search engines, it involves link building, focusing on Page Ranks, structure of the websites content, social marketing, meta and keywording..... Just to say a few, and there is much more!!!
Another very good way of getting your pages indexed is the use of XML Site Maps. Although it is something I think should be done, I do not suggest relying on this as your indexing tool as search engines don't seem to revisit enough times.
When first looking into SEO or into hiring a SEO professional, please look carefully as to what they are offering you. Ask what and how can they help your website/ business get more exposure and higher rankings in the search engines.
